I have to finish the storyboard, the part just before the end is weak and I need to add some gags to it. I'm probably over thinking the whole damn thing though.

Character Painting

Here's the character painting that will open the "Goober" short. I inked it on Bristol and then "painted" it in ArtRage. I love the Art Bartsch paintings in the beginning of the TerryToons shorts and wanted something like that right before the title card. I'm no Art Bartsch but this will do for now. I'll probably use ArtRage for painting most of the backgrounds but I'd like to try my hand at using real paint for some. In the meantime, I'm rewriting the beginning to simplify things and looking where I can cut scenes in order to bring down the overall running time. Originally, The short was to be around 7 minutes. I'd like to cut a couple of minutes of it.

Goober Sleeve, revisited

So I've decided to revisit a short I started working on a few years ago but abandoned because I was unhappy with my abilities at the time. I don't think I'm any happier now with the way I draw but I've decided to revise the short. I'm going to start with sprucing up the storyboard. The gags are pretty weak so I want to make it funnier. I'll work on the character designs too as I'm not happy with them either. I'm hoping to speed up the tempo and work in some "Tyeresque" animation. I just want to have fun with it as I haven't found drawing all that much fun lately. Hopefully, I'll make some progress in the next few weeks. Here's some of the only footage I animated a few years ago. Not very good, but I'm hoping to improve on it.

This is my first try at digital painting using ArtRage. It's a cool program that mimics the look and feel of real paints. I inked the pencils in Illustrator and then colored the lines in Photoshop before importing into ArtRage. It's only a first try and the only thing I'm happy with is the cat's nose. I basically tried to put to use the great info in Sherm Cohen's tutorials that he made for ArtRage and Illustrator.

It's a shame that the last six years of his life were robbed from him by Alzheimer's. He would have been 64 on January 3rd. Rest in peace Dad. Obituary

Wow, no posts in two months. Not like you missed anything special. Here's a couple of crappers for ya. The first is a setup for a music video I'm making for a dumb song my friend Chris and I wrote over 12 years ago. Called, "The Piggy Song". Four chords (the best ones of course) and crappy singing and production. It was recorded in Chris' basement with my old Yamaha 4-track cassette recorder. What a pain in the ass, bouncing three tracks down to one then recording two more and bouncing those down to one so on. Anyway, when it's done I hope you think it's retarded. It will mostly be illustrations and cheap Flash animation. Think early Hanna Barbera, now cut even more corners.

I've started working on a couple of characters for a short (very short) that I'd like to start working on here and there. The story, if you could call it that is starting to come together and I'll start work on the storyboards soon. I have a few modest goals that I'd like to achieve with this short. Foist, there's no dialog but it is going to be set to music. In fact the short is wholly inspired by the song, in title and feel. I'd also like to try and experiment with design a little. Just something different for me, stuff that I haven't tried to draw before. I'd like to stick to an actual production process. Board it first, then work on bar sheets and move on to layout and so on. I tend to do everything scatterbrain. That's probably why I never finish anything. Here's some rough doodles done in short bursts at work or on the train ride to or from work. Oh, the title is "Welcome To The Theatron Animatronique" taken from the song of the same name by Secret Chiefs 3. Here's a live version of the song for those of you (probably everyone) that hasn't heard the song. Trey Spruance rules!!

I inked them with a brush pen and added some awful color in Photoshop. The bird's head lost a little something when I inked it. The eyes don't look as good as the pencil drawing. Nothing special here, just some lunch break crap.

John was nice enough to critique my go at this Rod Scribner drawing. I tried to follow John's advice as best as my pencil will let me. I don't think the details on both of Bugs and Willoughby are as crammed together as my first attempt. I corrected the angle of Bugs' neck and also the tilt of the head. Willoughby's head could stand to be tilted just a little more. Not perfect by any means but there's some improvement.

I took a stab at John K's step by step lesson for constructing a Rod Scribner drawing. Though my drawing didn't come out very good I do think it really helped hammer home the concept of having the smaller forms wrap around the larger ones. I love Scribner's drawings but I don't copy them often as I find all those wrinkles kind of intimidating. I guess I should man up and get to studying his work. He's one of my favorite Warner's animators. I did do a couple of drawings from one of his scenes in "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery". They're way off compared to the originals so I'm going to go back and try them again.

I busted out the ol' brush and ink last night to ink some of those Hank Ketcham studies I did and a couple of quick Owen Fitzgerald copies too. I then decided to try and ink someone else's work, which I've never done. So in order to fail right from the start I printed out a Jim Smith Chestacles drawing from his sketchbook and taped it to the back of a sheet of bristol and light boxed it. Why not screw up the best? Right? The original drawing was already tight to begin with so there wasn't much to do except try and keep the line thickness consistent with Jim's drawing. I still can't get a super clean line with a brush. I should probably splurge on a Kolinsky and see if that helps. I'm going to practice this some more and print out more of Jim's sketches along with other artists pencil drawings.

Run Cycle-Re Revised

So after my last lame attempt at animating a run cycle David Gemmill was kind enough to offer me some tips. I sat down last night and tried to apply his advice. I think it's a definite improvement over the last two tries but the overlapping action is screwed up and kind of stiff. Feel free to tell me what else is wrong with it. I threw in some Daffy heads I drew while watching "Riff Raffy Daffy" for the thousandth time. I love that long-billed Daffy from Davis' shorts.

Oswald Walk Cycle

Taking a cue from John K's latest lesson, I decided to try and copy one of the coolest walk cycles I've ever seen. It's from the Oswald short "Hells Heels", just released on the Woody Woodpecker set. As you'll see I screwed it up when the cycle starts to repeat. The first and last drawings ended up too far apart so there's a noticeable jump when the walk cycle repeats, effectively killing any rhythm that was taking place. Maybe I shouldn't have tried something as difficult as this. One character is hard enough for me so two at one time is out of my league. I think I'll go and give those Bosko cycles a try. I added the click track to my version. The walk is on a 12 beat, meaning 12 frames per beat which in this case would be each step. Timing to a beat is something I've spent a lot time studying ever since reading about it in Bill Hanna and Shamus Culhane's books. Here's the original walk cycle followed by my crappy imitation.

Here's a cruddy little piece of animation. I'm going to keep adding to it, there's a reason he starts out in that awkward position. I just haven't drawn it yet. I've still got a couple more drawings to add to this bit also. I'm a little bit happy with the few frames of smear drawings. I've been freeze framing Bobo Cannon's animation in some of Chuck Jones' shorts, especially "Dover Boys" and it's starting to sink in. Yes, I know it looks like a poor man's excuse for Tex Avery's wolf. I think I study Louis Schmitt's model sheets too much. The drawing above is probably the best of the bunch. Too bad it only lasted two frames.

Run Cycle-Revised

So I gave that dog another go at a run cycle except this time I tried it more along the lines of a Hanna Barbera limited animation cartoon. I've been watching the Huckleberry Hound DVD a lot this past week (my son's latest discovery) so I thought that might be fun. It was actually very helpful. I learned a lot from just this crappy cycle and I think it's going to help when I give it a go again using fuller animation. The first part is on twos and the second on ones. I can only assume H-B did it the same way. Just take a walk or run and pull out some frames. Real cheap time saving stuff.

Here's another crappy pencil test. This is a work in progress, I'm going to have him do more than run, I just haven't had the time to finish it today. I'll try and finish it up by the end of the week. I added music (again). I think it's a nice way to distract from the overall crappiness of it. In case anyone is curious the song is "Grab The Deed", written by Marvin Hatley and recorded by the Beau Hunks. They recorded five albums (I think) of music from the Hal Roach comedies. I very highly recommend anything that they've released. They're album "Contrasts" has a great cartoony album cover and the recorded a version of "Manhattan Serenade" using Scott Bradley's arrangement, among other great songs.

Here's some more model sheet drawings from last night. I tried to just glance at the model sheets and the underlying construction and then go back and fill in the details. I was trying to build upon the various shapes rather than stare at the model sheets and try to copy them perfectly. Looking at Lulu I though she'd be easy to draw but I had a hard time with her. Much harder than the comic book version. At least for me it is. And yes, that's Gabby. He's annoying but surprisingly fun to draw.

Here's the same sketches for my previous post inked with a brush. It's been a long time since I've inked anything using a brush and it shows. The line quality is really inconsistent and sometimes downright shitty. The chubby lady doesn't look too bad to me though. I have to say that I forgot how much I enjoy inking with a brush, despite the results. Definetly something I'm going to spend much more time working on.

I've been messing around drawing Spike and ended up animating this pointless little bit here. I was trying to emulate some Michael Lah style running and I don't think I really succeeded. Though I think the split second when Spike is starting to run in place came out OK. I think it even looks like Spike in one or two drawings :) It's pretty sloppy and rushed but I just wanted to animate something, anything. I added music (cut up pieces of Scott Bradley scores) because I can't help myself, and it's not quite as boring to watch.

Donald Heads

I was sitting on my ass watching the Spurs/Suns game last night and decided to do something more constructive. So I drew some Donald heads while sitting on my ass watching the game. The front view drawing came out real bad, but the Suns went on a run to pull within 10 with a about four minutes left. I wasn't paying too much attention to detail while drawing that one. It was a good game, I would've liked the series to go to seven games though. Both teams are fun to watch. Though I was rooting for the Spurs. Tim Duncan rules, even though he killed my Knicks in the '99 finals.

I haven't spent much time drawing from cartoons lately so I decided to just sit down and freeze frame some cartoons. I'm real rusty so they didn't come out very good. I realized that I never really sat down and drew Bugs Bunny, which is odd because he's my favorite next to Screwy Squirrel. I did a couple of drawings of Charlie Horse from Bob Clampett's "It's A Grand Ol' Nag". I had a real tough time with his legs. There's a couple of drawings from Barney Bear cartoons too. I need to sit down and work on animating which I keep saying I'm going to do but never do. Lazy.

I've always loved Michael Lah's animation, so I decided to copy a scene of his from "Droopy's Good Deed" to try and get an understanding of how he animates those hilarious walks and runs. Here's the first part, I'm going to keep working on the rest of this short scene.

I absolutely love the Fox and Crow cartoon "Robin Hoodlum", the backgrounds, animation and character designs are all fantastic. Oh and most of all it's funny. Here's some quick sketches I did while watching it, they're pretty rough.

Tom Fast Run Cycle

In one page of Preston Blair's book he has a four drawing run cycle of Tom. I decided to try and copy them. I realize it's no great feat to copy someone else's animation drawings and pass them off as your own but my goal when copying them was to pay attention to keeping them as close to the original drawings as possible. I have a tendency to get sloppy and have trouble keeping my drawings from getting smaller or larger from frame to frame.

Pencil Test

I finally downloaded the rest of Nat Falk's "How To Make Animated Cartoons" from the Animation Archive the other day and decided to print out that and Preston Blair's original printing of his book and combine it with a load of model sheets and bind it all up. Now I've got everything nice and organized, instead of having papers all over the place.

I was reading Nat Falk's book and the last page had pictures of two key drawings and suggested as practice to then go and draw the breakdown and inbetweens. So I figured I'd give it go. Here's my feable attempt. Excuse the sloppyness, I didn't use a light box or peg bar. Also, I inserted blanks so as not to screw up the timing. I don't like looking at held poses where there should be inbetweens. I'm going to finish this off I think and then try working from the other keys.

Just working on this awesome model sheet from the Terrytoon "The Temperamental Lion" that was posted on the Animation Archive. I think the biggest problem I'm having is that I'm drawing his legs to long.

I was cleaning out some of my old sketchbooks from my closet and ran across one book from a couple of years ago. Here's some of the drawings that I don't totally hate. The inking sucks on a couple. The paper wasn't quite meant for ink. It bled all over.

Here's some more drawings from different Lantz model sheets. I find Woody's body to be very difficult to draw. I'm going to study Emery Hawkins' scenes in "Apple Andy", there's some fantastic poses in them but I hate drawing and looking at a computer screen. There's no room on my desk. I suppose I could print out some screen shots but then I'd have to get off my ass and get some ink for this cruddy printer.

Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to practice today but I managed to squeeze this drawing in from the Screwy model sheets I've been practicing. Meathead's head looks a little off to me. Hopefully I can get some more done tomorrow. I posted the model sheets I've been working from some time ago on my other blog, right here.
